He does this with spot-on comic timing and the endearing physicality he gives his characters. Squeers in earlier Rabbit Run productions of “Oliver” and “Nicholas Nickleby,” respectively.) Hill, as alcoholic actor Nick Cricker playing the drunkard Durdles, manages to get a laugh on every line. He does so with so much charm that he wins over the audience with each coy smile, owns them when he breaks character with an inappropriate wave during the performance, and nearly steals the show with his delivery of the self-deprecating song “Never the Luck.” (This from the fellow who portrayed evil personified as Bill Sykes and Mr. Malinowski plays the aspiring but ill-equipped actor Phillip Bax, who plays a minor character named Bazzard. Stand-outs in supporting roles include David Malinowski and Tom Hill, who are hilarious. Chriparkle, and Kelsey Bowens and Kyle Lorek as the actors playing Helena and Neville Landless, two foreigners suspected of Drood’s murder, are also terrific. Although their off-stage personas are not given as much exposure, Heather Arata as the actress playing Rosa Budd, Carl Simoncic as the actor playing Rev. Kelly Smith,= as the actress playing Drood,= and Sandy Peck,= as the actress playing Cockney opium seller Princess Puffer,= are terrific as troupe players and their on-stage counterparts. He deliriously lusts after his nephew Edwin Drood’s betrothed under the guise of her music tutor. In particular, Rabbit Run regular Brian Altman is superb as the music hall’s leading man who plays the bad guy, John Jasper, as a bipolar Snidely Whiplash. The unmitigated success of this production can also be attributed to the strength of its featured cast. He is then given the opportunity to step into the role of the Mayor in the play and demonstrate his unrivaled ability to create an intriguing character out of relatively nothing. As the music hall troupe’s Chairman and its production’s Master of Ceremonies, Roth interacts with the audience armed with veteran showmanship, a quick wit, and an arsenal of deliciously bad and bawdy one-liners specific to the period. In “Drood,” this professional performer has found the perfect vehicle to do what he does best, which is to charm an audience into submission. Nor is it a mystery as to why this Rabbit Run production of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” soars, which it does from beginning to end. It also includes a significant amount of banter that did not originate with the novel, making much of this play rather un-Dickensian in tone and temperament. This play-within-a play fabrication provides us with an array of delightfully over-the-top vaudevillian actors presenting a production filled with wonderful, overly dramatic characters. Another contributing factor is the play’s pretense of a Victorian-era music hall troupe staging this Dickens drama. Some songs, such as “Moonfall,” are delightful while the Act One-ending “Off to the Races” is a two-fisted romp. The story is seasoned with witty songs that help move along the plot, flesh out each key character, and add much needed energy and effervescence to the proceedings. For one thing, Holmes cleverly transformed the drab drama about young Edwin Drood’s disappearance at the hands of someone associated with his fiancee, Rosa Bud, into a musical comedy. There is certainly no mystery associated with how playwright Rupert Holmes was able to turn Dickens’ bleak, unfinished work into a critically acclaimed, Tony Award-winning production when it played on Broadway in 1985. Each performance of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” ends by consensus, with the killer chosen by the majority vote of that evening’s audience. Yes, Charles Dickens’ final novel - on which this play is based - is a murder mystery, but the author died in 1870 before unveiling the murder or the murderer. Has nothing to do with it being a “whodunit” drama. “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” at Rabbit Run Theater The real mystery surrounding the current staging of

There are a ton of benefits to be enjoyed from window film, and we’re going to explore them a little more in separate sections here with some more detailed information for you to consider: Benefits Aesthetic Versatility Window films are a cost-effective and easy to install option to increase the insulation and heat retention in your home, and most are either installed with 3m double-sided tape or by simply sticking them straight to your windows with a safe adhesive provided with the insulating window film. This is great for sash windows and more modern windows alike, its great for preventing the loss of heat through the glass pane window in your windows regardless of whether they are single or double glazing windows. Window film insulation prevents that heat from escaping for forming another seal on your windows, projecting the heat flow back into the room. The heat transfer from your radiators and fireplaces all contribute to the warmth in your home, so it’s a real issue when a lot of it is lost through your glass windows. Primarily, insulation window film is installed to keep the warmth inside your home by reducing the amount of heat lost through the transparent glass pane window, however, in the summer it also helps to keep rooms cool by reducing the heat from sunlight into your home. Window film has a dual purpose for different times of the year. Insulation film can really increase a whole host of positives in your abode, something which we’ll delve into deeper in a later section. However, window film not only benefits the comfort of your home but also energy costs, with better heat retention in your home leading to less wasted energy and reduced energy bills each week.Īdditionally, most types of window film also provide protection from harmful UV rays in the summer months, giving you peace of mind that you can relax in the sunshine without worrying about UV rays. If your house insulation is to a good standard, and your windows too, then window film will definitely provide that added layer of thermal insulation that will make a massive difference in the comfort of your home. Although window film isn’t magic, and if your windows suffer from air-leak problems or the insulation in your house isn’t up to a good standard, window film won’t solve your heat retention problems. In short, yes, window film really does work. In this guide we’re going to explore the key questions surround window film, and whether something as small as a window film can make a big difference to the insulation of your property! Does window insulation film really work? Window films have been around for some time, and originally window films were used in commercial settings, before being fine-tuned for the residential house. Now, double-glazed windows do possess much better thermal properties than a single pane window, but even double-glazed windows need a helping hand for insulation, and that is where window insulation films step up. However, no matter how essential they are, they do create some problems for the heat retention of your home, with a huge amount of heat loss generated from them. Windows are absolutely critical to the aesthetics of your property and, of course, to the mental and physical health of the home’s occupants. If you are not certain of a design, we can help! Might it be that ( Voynich researchers will perhaps groan at this point, but…) some of these were emended by a later owner? Moreover, there is no suggestion as to which of the ciphertext letters might be enciphering numbers (the two instances of “2” given are actual ‘2’ digits, not carefully interpreted ‘e’ ciphers), and aren’t pirates always pacing out distances from curious rocks etc?įor example, “doeurs” is a mere dot away from “coeurs” while mysterious non-words such as “filttinshientecu” might actually start “fils…” rather than “filt…”. The fact that the ‘Z’ shape apparently occurs both with and without a dot implies (to me, at least) that a number of dots may well have slipped in (or out) during the writing. Certainly, there are indeed errors in the text: but I don’t personally think that throwing your hands up and guessing at the correct plaintext values (which is what most treasure hunters seem to do) is methodologically sound.įar less cryptographically naive would be to try to classify many of the errors as probable pigpen enciphering errors (where, for example, the difference between A and B is simply a dot). The best single page presentation of it I’ve found comes from this French site that tries to colour-code the letters. Povr en pecger une femme dhrengt vous n ave Here’s one version from the Internet with spaces added in for marginal extra clarity:-ĭe mielle ef ovtre fous en faites une ongat …while the cryptogram itself looks like this (click on it to see a larger image)…Īnd yet despite all that clarity, the cipher mystery remains, because if you use the above key to decipher the above ciphertext, what you get is an extremely confusing cleartext, to the point that perhaps “clearasmudtext” would frankly be a better word for it. Arranged in traditional pigpen style, the key looks like this… Īnother famous La Buse treasure hunter was called Bibique (real name Joseph Tipveau, he wrote a book called “Sur la piste des Frères de la Côte”), but who shot himself in 31st March 1995, I’m sorry to say.īut with my crypto hat back firmly on, I have to say that the cipher system ascertained by de La Roncière could barely be more straightforward: a pigpen cipher, with letters of the alphabet arranged in a very simple manner, and with some of the shapes also used to represent digits (AEIOU=12345, LMNR=6789). So perhaps it’s no wonder that people desperately want to believe that there’s pirate gold in (or perhaps under) them thar island hills. Well… another famous Levasseur story goes that as he was crossing a bridge over what was known as “la ravine à Malheur”, he said “Avec ce que j’ai caché ici, je pourrais acheter l’île” – ‘ with what I’ve hidden here, I could buy the whole island‘. Just so you know, John C-W himself “believes buried the bounty according to a complex riddle inspired by the 12 labors of Hercules”, ten of which he believes he has solved. Reginald Cruise-Wilkins (1913-1977) “had done code-breaking work with the British forces and he found references to Andromeda in Levasseur’s enigma”, says John Cruise-Wilkins, who even today continues searching for the treasure that so obsessed his father from 1949 onwards. Savy herself believed that the answer was somehow connected with some strange carvings that she found on her property, depicting “ chiens, serpents, tortues, chevaux“, as well as “ une urne, des coeurs, une figure de jeune femme, une tête d’homme et un oeil monstrueusement ouvert“. Spurred on by the promise of gold-gold-gold, numerous treasure hunters have poured decades of their lives into this whole, ummm, ‘hopeful enterprise’. In 1934, the eminent French librarian Charles de La Roncière at the Bibliothèque National de France wrote a book about the affair called “ Le Flibustier mystérieux, histoire d’un trésor caché“. The documents were retrieved from the Archives Nationales de la Réunion in 1923 for a lady from the Seychelles called Rose Savy(who was descended from Le Butin’s family): she to flew to Paris with it to try to solve its mysteries. But even though this is widely referred to as the “La Buse Cryptogram”, I can’t see any obvious reason to connect the pirate Olivier Levasseur (‘La Buse’) with it. To summarize Part 1, an ex-pirate known as ‘Le Butin’ left a will, two letters, and an enciphered note describing where he had buried treasure on Île de France (the former French name for Mauritius). “If the online forms of your money are frozen, that’s like destroying people economically, limiting their ability to exercise their political voice,” Thiel told me. Several founders agreed to talk with The Free Press for this article. All have expressed shock and dismay at what is happening to the company they created. The people who founded PayPal-the so-called PayPal Mafia-include Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, David Sacks and Max Levchin. So far, they have not, said Aaron Terr, director of public advocacy at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. In June 2021, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other civil-liberties groups wrote a letter to PayPal and Venmo, calling on them to open up. PayPal won’t say how many of them it has suspended or banned. These are entrepreneurs, writers, academics, activists-the very same people PayPal, whose mission is “democratizing financial services,” was meant to empower. If you’ve been banned, you’ll need an attorney to file a subpoena for the internal PayPal documents-simply to learn why you’ve been banned. If you’re one of the lucky ones and your account has just been suspended, you can go to customer service, explain your situation and hope that someone gets back to you. After that period, we’ll email you with information on how to access your funds.” Then, toward the bottom: “If you have funds in your PayPal balance, we’ll hold it for up to 180 days. In case there is any doubt, the email adds: “You’ll not be able to conduct any further business using PayPal.” They are simply told via an email from PayPal’s Risk and Compliance Department that, after an internal review, “we decided to permanently limit your account as there was a change in your business model or your business model was considered risky.” They have somehow offended the sensibilities of someone somewhere deep inside the bureaucracy. One by one, they go to start their business day only to find a baffling message from their payments app informing them: “You can no longer do business with PayPal.” Since they mostly were illiterate textile workers, no journals were kept or found, no letters home, little documentation other than from newspaper accounts. Many died on the trip more died of illness at the warehouse others found work in the union mills or on farms or in households. Because they were making cloth for the Confederate Army, some 400 mill workers, mostly women and children, from the Roswell Woolen Mill, were arrested, shipped off to Marietta, then to Nashville, and finally to Louisville, where they were housed in an old warehouse until work could be found for them. This was the beginning of Sherman’s total war campaign, designed to bring the South to its knees and to bring a swifter end to a long, bitter war. After the Battle of Kennesaw Mt., as the Union troops advanced towards Roswell, they were given orders to burn all the mills and round up all the mill workers, charging them with treason.
